The chairman of Nepal's Constituent Assembly today asked political parties to make "sincere efforts" in reaching consensus on Constitution drafting and expressed confidence that a January deadline for promulgating the statuette was possible.
"The Nepalese people have been making all efforts to draft their own constitution through the Constituent Assembly ever since the establishment of democracy in the country in 1950 and if the political parties make sincere efforts, it is still possible to promulgate the new constitution within the January 22, 2015 deadline, CA chairman Subhash Nembang said during addressing a gathering here.
"It is necessary to draft the constitution within the stipulated time frame of one year after the election of the Constituent Assembly, so as to consolidate the achievements of the democratic movement of 2006," Nembang said.
"The new constitution should incorporate the principles of secularism, republic system, inclusiveness, federal structure based on ethnic identity and economic viability, human rights, child rights etc," he added.
"The political parties have failed to settle key disputes related to the constitution drafting including forms of governance, number of federal units, judicial system and electoral system even as less than one and half months are left to promulgate the constitution", Nembang said.
He also underlined the need to forge unity and collaboration not only among all the political parties represented in the Constituent Assembly but also those political parties which are not included in assembly.
