Construction of the Indian National Defence University (INDU), the first of its kind in the country, has commenced in Gurgaon.
The Defence Ministry had acquired 205 acre and 15 marla of land in September 2012 in Gurgaon for setting up of world class INDU.
Though the foundation stone of the University was laid in May 2013, work had not started till now.
To meet the aspirations of villagers of Binola and Bilaspur in having access from their fields to National Highway 8, Ministry of Defence transferred 2 acre 3 kanal 9.5 marla land to Haryana government in August this year to be used as a track, a statement by the Defence Ministry said.
With all revenue related issues resolved, infrastructure development for the University finally commenced with the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony held at site recently, it added.
Air Marshal A S Bhonsle of Integrated Defence Staff laid the first brick for the construction of boundary wall, perimeter road, guard room and watch towers.
After the 1999 Kargil conflict with Pakistan, the then NDA government had set up a Review Committee which had recommended establishment of a university to exclusively deal with defence and strategic matters.
The university will develop and propagate higher education in defence studies, defence management, defence science and technology and promote policy-oriented research related to national defence, apart from providing inputs for policy formulation and preparing officers for higher leadership roles.
