Contract worker regains use of one hand after marathon surgery

A contract worker who lost both his hands in an explosion at a cordite factory in Nilgiris district on June 2 regained use of one of his hands after a marathon eight hour surgery at Ganga hospital here.
The right hand of 41-year old Matru Yadav of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh was joined to the left wrist in the operation performed by six micro-surgical teams and three anaesthetical teams.
The man had lost both his hands in the recent explosion in the factory at Aruvangadu in Nilgiris district and was brought to the hospital on June two, Dr Raja Sabapathy, Head of the Department of Plastic and Hand and Microsurgery, said.
His right forearm was severely crushed making re-attachment impossible and the left was so badly crushed that reconstruction of the same side was also not possible, he said.
The patient is now recovering well after surgery, he said.
