"I was informed by Star theatre authorities that since they think that the film has an anti-government propaganda they have decided not to screen it," the film's director and producer Agnidev Chatterjee told PTI.
"The decision to cancel the screening was taken only at the last minute. We learnt of it when they refused to sell the tickets when the film was released yesterday," Chatterjee said.
Home Secretary, Basudeb Banerjee said, "Star Theatre is not a government hall, but owned by the KMC and it has been given on lease to a private party. It is their discretion which film they will screen.
"The government has no desire to ban any film. It is being said that the government has banned it. It is totally baseless. The government has not interefered in any way," he said.
KMC's member of Mayor-in-council Atin Ghosh also said, "although Star is owned by us, we have given it on lease to a private party. We are not involved in the day to day affairs of the theatre. The selection of the films are done by them and not us."
Starring actors like Rituparna Sengupta and Ananya Chatterjee with a guest appearance by West Bengal Education minister and thespian Bratya Basu, '3 Kanya' is the story of how a woman raped by three men finds justice only after her case is highlighted by a news channel.
"Many people are saying that it reminds them of the Park Street rape case and therefore a rumour has spread that the film is against the establishment. But I want to clarify that it is a social film sans any political message," the director-producer said.
