Convener committee formed to run Bharathiar University

A three-member committee was today formed to take care of the daily affairs of Bharathiar University here, following the arrest of its Vice Chancellor A Ganapathy, days ago on bribery charges.
The convener committee was necessitated to run the varsity, following the arrest of Ganapathy on February 3 for allegedly accepting Rs 30 lakh as bribe from an aspirant for the post of an assistant professor.
He is lodged in the central jail along with Chemistry professor Dharmaraj who allegedly brokered the deal.
A special syndicate meeting was held today, which formed the committee headed by Principal Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, Sunil Paliwal, and two professors, Thirunavukarasu and Jayakumar as members.
Later talking to reporters, Paliwal said the committee will function till a new Vice-Chancellor is appointed.
Stating that the investigation against Ganapathy was approved by the state government, he said the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) officials carried out raids and inquiry, following several complaints against him.
However, there was no need for a CBI inquiry into the issue, he said.
Meanwhile, Dharmaraj was placed under suspension, varsity sources said.
