Cop, killed fighting terrorists, laid to rest with full honours

Police constable Parvez Ahmad, killed in a gunfight with terrorists in Srinagar, was laid to rest today with full honours at his ancestral village in Rajauri district near here with a large number of people, including senior Army and police officers, attending his last rites braving incessant rains.

Ahmad's body reached his village Dhandote near Budhal town of the district around 3 pm from Srinagar and was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard with full honours, a police official said.

A selection grade constable, Ahmad was killed yesterday while fighting militants during a raid on their suspected hideout in Batmaloo locality of central Srinagar.

A pall of gloom descended on the village and adjoining areas after the news of Ahmad's death spread and the people started assembling at his residence to join his funeral prayers.

Senior officers, including Rajouri's Senior Superintendent of Police Yougal Manhas, Colonel T P Sharma, the Commanding Officer of 60 Rashtriya Rifles, Commandant Liaqat Chowdhary, the in-charge of the second battalion of Indian Reserve Police and Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) Abdul Quyoom Mir attended the funeral procession of the martyr and paid rich tributes to him, the official said.

He said Deputy Superintendent of Police (Operations) Sukhdev Singh, Manjakote's Sub-Divisional Police Officer Imtiyaz Ahmed and Budhal's Executive Magistrate Khursheed Tantray were also present on the occasion.

Thousands of people from the village and adjoining areas braved the incessant rains to attend the funeral prayers for the slain policeman, he said.

The official said the mourners also visited the bereaved family to express their solidarity with them.
