A fast-track court here has sentenced the son of a police officer to life imprisonment for raping and murdering a woman constable in 2014.
Additional district and sessions judge Mamta Shukla yesterday sentenced Subham Mishra (21) to life imprisonment and also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000, after convicting him in the case.
Additional Public Prosecutor Rajiv Beriwal said Mishra, the son of an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), had on September 17, 2014 barged inside the government quarter of the woman constable (24), staying in his neighbourhood in the Police Line area, with an intention of theft.
When Mishra was spotted by the woman constable, he hit her on head following which she fainted.
The accused then raped the girl before killing her, Beriwal said.
Later, Mishra and his associate Alok Singh were nabbed in connection with the crime and charge sheet was filed against them under IPC sections 450 (house-trespass), 379 (punishment for theft), 376 (rape), 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), he said.
Singh had purchased the mobile phone of the victim which was stolen by the accused after murdering her, he added.
After recording the statements of as many as 27 witnesses and hearing both the sides, the court last evening awarded life imprisonment to the main accused Subham whereas sent the co-accused Singh to three years in jail under section 411 of IPC for purchasing the stolen mobile.
