Taking positive global cues, copper advanced by 1.68 per cent to Rs 311.65 per kg in futures trade today as participants engaged in widening their positions.
Besides, pick up in demand from consumers at the domestic spot market supported the upside.
At the Multi Commodity Exchange, copper for delivery in February surged Rs 5.15 or 1.68 per cent to Rs 311.65 per kg in a business turnover of 20,654 lots.
On similar lines, metal for delivery in far-month April traded higher by Rs 5.05 or 1.63 per cent to Rs 315.65 per kg in 1,309 lots.
Marketmen said sentiment in copper bolstered after it rallied with other metals in global markets following China's central bank chief stepping up efforts to restore stability to the nation's currency and economy, fueling the biggest rally in the yuan for more than a decade.
Globally, copper climbed 2.5 per cent to USD 4,612 a metric tonne in Shanghai.
