"Police have arrested Sameer Sheikh, living near Panaji, from West Bengal for kidnapping the girl and demanding ransom from her mother," said inspector Siddharth Shirodkar of Panji police station.
Sheikh allegedly kidnapped the girl from near her house in Talegaon on December 13.
"He took the girl to West Bengal and then to Assam," the police officer said.
He said Sheikh was constantly calling the girl's mother over phone demanding ransom for her release.

"Acting upon the complaint, Panaji police formed a special team which was sent to West Bengal along with the complainant," Shirodkar said.
He said the police had asked the woman to promise Sheikh about getting the money demanded by him, and he ultimately walked into the trap.
"However, when the police team reached West Bengal the accused had already left for Assam with the girl. The woman pleaded with him to come to West Bengal pretending that she had no money to travel, to which Sheikh agreed," Shirodkar said.
"However, Sheikh did not bring the child with him and revealed that she is in Assam," Shirodkar said, adding another police team then went to Assam and rescued the girl who was brought to Goa today.
Shirodkar did not elaborate the timing of Sheikh's arrest and the place in Assam from where the girl was rescued.
Sheikh has been booked under various sections of IPC and Goa Children's Act 2003.
