The cora grass is cultivated along the river beds of Cauvery near Thottiyam and Musiri in the district in about 1500 acres. With the manufacturing costs rising significantly they urged the government to assist them.
The Cora Mat Weavers have said as non-eco friendly mats made of nylon that are being smuggled from Singapore and Malaysia thus denting the prospects of these domestic and traditional weavers.
John David, spokesperson of Cora Mat Weavers Forum told PTI that also because of indifferent power supply, they have been able to weave only around 100 mats per day and only a maximum of 2000 mats a month.
