Corruption hitting developing economies: CBI chief

Underlining that corruption and economic crimes are hitting developing economies, CBI Director Ranjit Sinha today said such crimes are a wake up call for the law enforcement agencies.
Speaking at the valedictory ceremony of training programme on "Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Procedure" for 20 Sri Lankan police officers at agency's training academy here, Sinha said developing countries dominate the Transparency index in the list of most corrupt nations.
More than two-thirds of the 177 countries in the 2013 Index score below 50, on a scale from 0 (perceived to be highly corrupt) to 100 (perceived to be very clean) in the Transparency International's corruption perception index 2013 that offers a warning that the abuse of power, secret dealings and bribery continue to ravage societies around the world, the CBI chief said.

"The scourge of corruption and economic crimes have hit the rapidly expanding economies of developing nations, and that the law enforcement Agencies have to take this as a wake up call," he said.
He recalled strong traditional ties between India and Sri Lanka and said there are immense possibilities of collaboration and capacity building, especially in the techniques and intelligence collection and surveillance between the two countries.
The 20 Sri Lankan Police Officers were imparted intensive training for four weeks in a wide range of subjects, CBI said in a statement.
"The programme was intended to provide training with focus on intelligence process and investigative techniques which are being adopted in various countries for investigation of various crimes including investigation of corruption cases," CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad said.
