Costa Rica has said it is suing Nicaragua in The Hague over a 2010 military incursion that set up an outpost on its territory, reviving tensions between the Central American neighbours.
The litigation asks the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to "determine the definitive amount Nicaragua has to pay for the material damage suffered by Costa Rica," Foreign Minister Manuel Gonzalez said in a statement yesterday.
The move follows an ICJ ruling in December 2015 that found Nicaragua had violated Costa Rica's sovereignty by occupying the small tract of land, in an area known as Isla Portillos or Harbour Head. The two countries have long disputed the border in that zone.
Nicaragua had a year to reach an agreement with Costa Rica on compensation, but did not respond to San Jose's bill for USD 6.7 million.
Costa Rica's ambassador to The Hague, Sergio Ugalde, said he hoped the ICJ would rule on the matter by the end of this year.
