Council polls: BJP fields Gadkari aide Vyas on Nagpur seat

BJP today announced candidature of party spokesperson, Girish Vyas to contest lone Legislative Council seat from Nagpur district for Legislative Council elections slated for December 27 against Congress' Ashok Singh Chavan.
Vyas, a close aide of Union Minister and Nagpur MP Nitin Gadkari, is a former corporator and trustee in Nagpur Improvement Trust, sources said.
The announcement of his nomination came on the last day of filing of nomination for the biennial elections to be held for a total of eight seats.
Vyas is a grandson of Bachharaj Vyas, former president of Jan Sangh, Nagpur.
According to sources in the Congress, Chavan pipped Rajendra Mulak, sitting MLC and close confidant of then chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, to become the party nominee.
The eight MLCs in the biennial elections (held once in six years) are to be elected from local self-government bodies constituency. The seats are: Nagpur, Akola-Washim-Buldhana (both in Vidarbha), Solapur, Kolhapur (western Maharashtra), Ahmednagar, Dhule-Nandurbar in North Maharashtra and two seats in Mumbai.
The outgoing members are Rajendra Mulak, Gopikisan Bajoriya, Deepak Salunke, Mahadeo Mahadik, Arin Jagtap, Amrish Patel, Ramdas Kadam and Bhai Jagtap respectively.
