In a case of moral policing, an unmarried couple was beaten up by villagers who found them together at a village in West Garo Hills district, police said today.
Someone posted photos of the couple being assaulted on social media, which have gone viral.
A Garo woman and her non-Garo boyfriend were beaten up in the village under Tikrikilla police station area last night, police said.
The couple was taken to hospital from where they were discharged after first-aid.
The victims did not lodge any police complaint and no one was identified or arrested.
"They were caught and beaten up. As they have not lodge any complaint, we have initiated a case suo motu. Investigation is on. The matter has been informed to the Women's Commission," Superintendent of Police Dr MGR Kumar said.
The SP said the person who had posted the photos of assault on social media have deleted the photos and de-activated the account.

This fresh case of moral policing incident came four months after a woman was assaulted by a group of men for enjoying a picnic with her friends in Garo Hills in April.
