A Delhi court Wednesday acquitted Delhi BJP MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa of the charge of defacing a property by putting up election hoardings in 2017.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal granted relief to Sirsa, saying the police failed to prove the charge against him beyond reasonable doubt.

According to the FIR filed on February 18 last year, Sirsa had allegedly put up an election hoarding in Rajouri Garden of west Delhi during a bypoll campaign, seeking votes to "preach and support Sikhism".

The FIR was filed under sections of Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act for allegedly defacing the property in public view by writing or marking with ink, chalk, paint or any other material.

If convicted, Sirsa could have been punished with a maximum of one-year imprisonment or Rs 50,000 fine or both.
