Special Judge Dharmesh Sharma acquitted CBI Inspector N M Sehrawat and advocate N S Verma of the charges of allegedly taking a bribe of Rs three lakh for clearing the name of R K Jain, a property dealer from Co-operative Group Housing Society scam.

"The evidence has not been found to be trustworthy and (is) not nailing the accused to the hilt. I am of the opinion that the prosecution has miserably failed to prove its case against N M Sehrawat and accused N S Verma and they are given the benefit of doubt. Both the accused persons are acquitted," the judge said.

The CBI had argued before the court that Sehrawat and Verma allegedly attempted to obtain "illegal gratification" from different persons, who were accused or suspected of being involved in the CGHS scam, investigated by the agency.

It alleged the accused were trying to influence the CBI investigating officers (IOs) probing the CGHS scam case.

According to the CBI, Jain had informed advocate Verma about a CBI summons to him for his questioning in a CGHS scam case and Verma subsequently had told him that his friend Sehrawat could help him in clearing his name in lieu of a bribe of Rs 15 lakh.

It alleged that Jain initially refused to pay any bribe as he was confident of his innocence, however, the two accused pressurised him to pay a bribe of Rs three lakh.

During the trial, the two accused told the court that they were falsely implicated in the case by other senior CBI officials.

The CBI, during the adjudication of the case, had produced the intercepted call records between the duo, but the evidence was dismissed by the court.
