Court issues summons against IPS officer in encounter case

A special CBI court has issued summons against senior IPS officer J Ravindra Gaur in connection with a ten year old alleged fake encounter case in which a medicine trader, Mukul Gupta, was gunned down in the Bareilly district.
Gaur is presently posted as SP in the ninth battalion of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) in Moradabad. Apart from Gaur, nine other policemen have also been made accused in the case.
Special judge Rajesh Kumar passed the order as at the time of hearing other accused were either present or exemption applications had been moved on their behalf but Gaur's lawyer did not move any such application and said that he had no instruction from him.

On June 30, 2014, Mukul Gupta was killed in an encounter allegedly by the Bareilly police in Rukumpur, Madhavpur railway station falling within the Fatehganj police circle.
An FIR in connection the incident was registered after a court passed an order on an application under section 156(3) of the CrPC moved by the deceased's father Brijendra Gupta.
In the FIR it was alleged that the encounter had been carried out to get out of turn promotion. Brijendra Gupta had blamed Gaur and other cops for what he alleged was a fake encounter.
Later on a petition filed by Brijendra Gupta, the Allahabad High Court transferred the probe to the CBI on February 26, 2010. The CBI filed a charge sheet in the case on August 26, 2014.
