The sessions court refused to grant any interim protection to two absconders accused of being connected to the IPL betting racket here today.
Two bookies Pawan Chabra alias Pawan Jaipur and Sanjay Chabra alias Sanjay Jaipur had approached the sessions court yesterday seeking pre-arrest bail claiming that they are businessmen and are not involved in criminal activities like betting.
The Jaipur brothers claimed that they have family relations with Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara Singh. They said thay have a United Arab Emirates resident visa and left Mumbai on May 16 in connection with their business.
But, the police objected to their bail application stating that both brothers used to place bets on IPL matches even after they went to Dubai and they want to investigate further, based on transcripts of intercepted telephone conversations.
Meanwhile another local court remanded bookie Ritesh Bansal alias 'Bharat Delhi' today to police custody till June 26, after the Mumbai crime branch arrested him yesterday from Delhi for speaking to bookies in Pakistan.
So far, the police have arrested 16 in connection with the IPL betting case, while 15 others including Vindoo and Chennai Super Kings Team Principal Gurunath Mayiappan have been granted bail.
