An Odisha court today awarded death sentence to a 34-year-old man for murdering a man and his daughter over a dispute on ancestral property in 2011.
Jajpur District and Sessions Judge Jivan Ballav Das sentenced to death Ganeswar Mohanta of Bandhamunda Natisahi village after convicting him in the double murder of Dukhabandhu Mohanta (60) and his 30-year-old daughter Kanchan Mohanta, a widow, on March 14, 2011.
According to public prosecutor Kishore Chandra Kar, Ganeswar stabbed to death Dukhabandhu with a sharp-edged weapon on the village road in broad day light when he was returning home from farm land.
After killing Dukhabandhu, he rushed to his house, dragged out his daughter and killed her with the same blood-stained weapon in full public view, the prosecution said.
Awarding capital punishment to Ganeswar, the court held that the double murder came under the category of the "rarest of rare" case.
The court had examined 22 witnesses before delivering the judgement.
