A local court convicted two Bangladeshi nationals for staying in the country without valid documents and sentenced them to 14 months in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on them.
Assistant Judge H B Shelke of the district court convicted Ridoy Ashab Gulam Khan and and Milon Arif Shaikh on Friday and ordered that the two be deported to Bangladesh after completing their sentences.
The two were arrested on February 18 last year from the Poonam Garden area of Mira Road here by a team of the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell of Thane (Rural) Police, public prosecutor Vinit Kulkarni said.
They were arrested under relevant sections of the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950 and the Foreigners Act.
Advocate Sunil Patankar, appearing for the accused, had told court that the two were brought into the country by a human trafficker.
