CPI asks PM to explain India's two-child norm
Press Trust of India New Delhi The CPI today asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to publicly explain the significance of India's two-child norm, after a VHP leader said Hindus should have more children to prevent any "imbalance" in India's demographic profile.
"The Prime Minister must come out public on India's two- child norm and its significance. To say that Hindu families have no right finally decide how many children they should have is against our Constitution," the party said in a statement here.
VHP's secretary general Champat Rai had said that Hindus should have more than one children to ensure that there was no imbalance in India's demographic profile.
The CPI condemned in "severest terms the continued attempts of the RSS and its affiliates to malign minority communities and thereby pursue its hidden agenda of dividing the society" and termed the VHP leader's statement as "absurd" and "infringement" on the rights and privacy of individual family members.
"Its (VHP's) show of love and concern for Hindu families and the demographic imbalance caused by the adoption of family planning methods and norms are nothing but wrong understanding. Poverty and untouchability should be abolished to prevent conversion. Family planning should be followed by the people of all religions," the party said.
The CPI also said that former Mumbai and Punjab police chief Julio Ribeiro's expressions of insecurity as an Indian Christian showcased the "success of Ghar Wapasi.
