Terming the latest hike in prices of petrol and diesel as "anti-people", CPI today demanded the government roll back the rise in fuel rates.
"The (Narendra) Modi government has increased prices of oil when international price of oil is only $67 per barrel. It may be noted here that the Modi government has slapped a levy of Rs 3 when the petrol prices were falling internationally.
"The party urges upon the government to roll back the hike in petro-prices while at the same time calls upon people to agitate against the anti-people move," the party said in a statement.
Prices of petrol and diesel were increased by Rs 3.13 per litre and Rs 2.71 per litre respectively yesterday. The hike came on the back of Rs 3.96 per litre increase in petrol and Rs 2.37 a litre raise in diesel from May 1.
"Petrol now costs Rs 7.09 more and diesel Rs 5.08 more in the national capital, more than what it was 15 days ago. Similar is the case in other states too. The hike will have a cascading effect on prices of all essential commodities," CPI added.
