CPI expresses grief over former RS MP's death

CPI today expressed grief at demise of its former Rajya Sabha member and editor-in-chief of a Punjabi daily 'Nawan Zamana' Jagjit Singh Anand.
Anand (93), also a freedom fighter from Punjab, breathed his last at around 10 pm yesterday in Chandigarh, CPI said in a statement.
"The National Council of CPI expresses its deep condolences at the demise of comrade Jagjit Singh Anand, veteran freedom fighter and its senior leader from Punjab," the communist outfit said.
Ex-CPI National Council member, Anand had joined communist movement in the 1930s. After partition he settled down in Amritsar in Punjab, the party said.
"Anand was a great organiser and since 1953 he went around the state building party in almost all the districts. He was a popular and fearless journalist. He fought against the Khalistani attacks. He was a powerful Parliamentarian and made good contributions during his tenure in Rajya Sabha," the party said.
Anand is survived by his son Sukirat Anand and daughter Sungna, CPI said.
