In a statement, the party claimed that two CPI(M) MLAs -- Gouranga Chatterjee and Debolina Hembram -- were injured and had to be hospitalised due to "shocking violence" against Left Front MLAs within the West Bengal Legislative Assembly by some Trinamool Congress legislators.

Instead of taking action against those MLAs of the ruling party who launched an "unprovoked assault", three CPI(M) MLAs have been suspended from the House for the rest of the session, the party said.

"The root cause of the trouble is Trinamool Congress' intolerance towards the functioning of the Opposition in the Assembly. All democratic norms and legislative procedures are violated," CPI(M) Polit Bureau said in a statement.

Protesting this "assault on democracy", the party demanded the revocation of the suspensions of three CPI(M) MLAs.

"The rights of the Opposition in the Assembly should be protected and democratic norms observed," it said.
