"In politics, there is legitimate criticism against an opponent if you are using political language. But this type of language against a woman leader is totally unacceptable.

"My party has strongly opposed such a statement. It has made a public censure of the individual concerned and there is no room for such a statement in the party," Politburo member Brinda Karat told reporters here.

Terming the remarks as "unwarranted and derogatory", Politburo member and state unit Secretary Biman Basu said "his comments are against the political culture of our party. Our party does not approve such comments made by Anisur Rahman."

Rahman had made the remarks while speaking on the issue of compensation to rape victims in West Bengal.

"He has already apologized for his comments and he should be cautious in future against making any such unwarranted comment," Basu said.

Rahman, who had made the remarks at a meeting in North Dinajpur on Wednesday, was summoned to the party office in Kolkata yesterday, reportedly given a dressing down by the party leaders and asked to publicly apologise and withdraw the remark.
