CPI(M) demands immediate arrests in nun gangrape case

Accusing the West Bengal government's approach as "callous", CPI(M) today demanded immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the alleged gangrape of 72-year-old nun and demanded stern action against the police for taking no action in the case for almost a week.
"The government in all such incidents has always shown callous approach and inordinate delay. The government has failed to apprehend culprits despite having clear CCTV footage.
"What is more deplorable is that police have lodged cases against those, who were protesting this heinous incident," party leader Surya Kant Mishra told reporters here.
Claiming that Mamta Benerjee government was reluctant to hand over the case to CBI, Mishra said that before coming to power, Banerjee had demanded every case to be handed over to them.

"Now she is not talking about this. I dont know what role CBI is going to play in this case. Even if it is done, state has responsibility to apprehend the culprit and act against the cops also who were sleeping over the complaints of the victims," he said.
When asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking cognisance of this matter, Mishra said, "There has been a secret understanding between Prime Minister and Chief Minister of West Bengal. Some dealings have been finalised which was apparent after what happened today in the parliament," he said.

Mishra, who was in Delhi to take part in the party's Polit Bureau meeting said that the matter is a shame for every Indian.

"I believe that the state and union government, both have the responsibilities to handle this issue," added Mishra.
Asked about his party's future course of action into the case, Mishra said, "I have right to violate the law in the land where lawlessness and anarchy are being interpreted as law."
Meanwhile, the septuagenarian nun, who was gangraped at a convent, was released from hospital in the wee hours today and she left for an undisclosed destination, even as no arrests were made even six days after the incident.
Asked about centre's contemplation of disinvestment of Air India, Mishra said, "This is a government of disinvestment. The person who used to sell tea, has started selling the country by disinvesting every sector. Be it coal, be it bank, be it railway, be it defence.
