"We have been demanding for strict enforcement of labour laws and stringent punitive measures for violation of labour laws," state secretary M Y Tarigami told a rally in Udhampur, 70 kms from here.
J&K state committee of CITU observed 'protest day' on the call of Construction Workers Federation Of India (CWFI), which is affiliated to it.
Among other things, the protesters demanded implementation of central welfare act for construction workers, Rs 10,000 as minimum wage for them, reduction in prices of essential commodities and building material, and ensuring safety at work sites.
"There is exploitation and loot of workers through just non-implementation of the basic labour laws pertaining to minimum wages, working hours, safety in work places, social security benefits," Tarigami, who is also state president of CITU, said.
A large number of construction workers of various projects in the state participated in the protest.
While addressing the gathering, comrade Sham Prasad Kesar, a senior leader of CITU, said the welfare Act for construction workers should be implemented in all states.
