"We were denied permission by the Kolkata police to hold Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's rally at Hazra on May 25. The police has cited reasons like traffic congestion," CPI(M) state secretariat member Rabin Deb said.
When contacted, police officials refused to comment.
"The DC (South) will speak on the matter," Joint CP (headquarters) Javed Shammim told PTI. However, the DC (South), Vishal Garg, could not be reached.
No response from the OC of Kalighat police station, under which the Hazra area falls, Mahadeb Chakraborty, was available either.
Earlier this month, the party was not permitted to hold a public meeting at the Shyambazar five-point crossing in north Kolkata. Ultimately the rally was held at a different spot in the same area.
