Gupta, a member of the party's Central Committee since 2002, was the president of the All India Democratic Women's Association, women's wing of CPI(M) till recently.
Gupta, who played an active role in the tumultuous student's movement in the early sixties, joined the Communist Party in 1963.
She is survived by a son.
