CPI(M) today condemned the Israeli attacks on Gaza and urged the Narendra Modi government to raise the issue at international fora and demand immediate cessation of the strikes.
Terming the excuses given by the Israeli government for the attack "tenuous", the CPI(M)'s Politburo said there can be no justification for the "blatant" aggression in contravention of established international laws.
"The politburo strongly condemns the Israeli attack on Gaza. CPI(M) calls upon the government of India to strongly condemn this Israeli aggression on Palestine and demand an immediate cessation of the attack at international fora," said a CPI(M) press release.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leaving tomorrow for Brazil where he will attend the five-nation summit of BRICS nations on July 14 and 15.
CPI(M) said that for the past five days, Gaza has been subjected to bombardment from the air and the sea. More than 120 people have been killed, including children, as the missiles have targeted residential areas, the party claimed.
"The excuses given by Israeli government for the attacks are tenuous. There can be no justification for the blatant aggression which is in contravention of all established international laws," the party said, adding that UN Security Council should "immediately" intervene to end hostilities.
"There are reports that a ground invasion is imminent with Israeli PM (Benjamin) Netanyahu arrogantly declaring that Israel would not heed to any international 'pressure'.
"With Israeli artillery fire reported near the borders of Lebanon, there is great danger of the aggression spilling over to the entire region. The US has to rein in its close ally from pursuing this dangerous course of action," the party added.
