CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury today said there is "no question" of lending support to the ruling TMC or the BJP in the formation of gram panchayat boards in West Bengal.

Yechury's comment comes in the backdrop of reports of victorious Left Front candidates in certain places supporting the BJP to stop the TMC from coming to power in gram panchayats.

"If we have single party (Left Front) majority, then we will form the board. But, there is no question of supporting the BJP or the TMC.

"Our stand is clear; we will fight against both the parties. If someone is found to be violating the party line, then action would be taken," he told reporters here.

According to CPI(M) sources, it has already identified some people who have gone against the party line and is set to take stringent action against them.

"We are not bothered about whether we would be able to form the board or not, but we will not tolerate any sort of violation of our party line. The TMC and the BJP both need to be defeated," a senior CPI(M) leader said.

In continued violence over formation of gram panchayat (GP) boards, at least 30 people, including five policemen, were injured in clashes between the ruling TMC and opposition parties at two places in North Dinajpur district today, police said.

Bombs and bullets were used in the clashes that occurred at Daspara GP and Itahar GP under Chopra police station.

Yechury said Bengal is the only state where such clashes are being witnessed between cadres of the ruling party.

The incidents show how the police and administration have completely failed to maintain law and order situation in the state, he said.
