Party workers, including youth wing leaders and women, converged before taluk offices to lay siege in major cities as part of the party's Central Committee-sponsored strike.
Inaugurating the dawn-to-dusk strike at Kochi, CPI(M) state general secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said the agitation was against the anti-people and anti-worker polices of union government.
"The Union Government has a saddist approach towards poor people. They failed to check growing price rise and corruption. It also failed to take strong steps to check violence against women and providing them moral boost," he said.
The leader said the party would intensify the agitation in the coming days if the government failed to take steps to address the issues of people.
