CPI to corner Govt on economy, price rise in Parliament

Economic slowdown, price rise and FDI policy would be among major issues to be raised by CPI to corner the government in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.

'We have given notices on many important national issues. UPA government is carrying out policies to suit the interests of corporates and foreign investors but has not been able to turnaround the economy,' CPI Parliamentary Group leader Gurudas Dasgupta said here.

Other issues include autonomy of CBI, children's death after consuming mid-day meal and the Uttarakhand devastation, he said, adding the Session starting Monday would be 'unusually short as the government is actually running away from debates on issues affecting the people. There are only 16 working days.'

The CPI leader said, 'We will scrutinise and decide about our floor strategy accordingly to corner the government on its pro-corporate, anti-people and undemocratic policies and legislations.'

Terming the forthcoming session as 'very crucial', Dasgupta said the worsening economic situation shows the government has 'failed very miserably' to effect fiscal consolidation or to check devaluation of rupee against US dollar to 'unprecedented proportions'.

Accusing the government of 'doling out heavy concessions to foreign corporations', he said, 'While fiscal investments and savings are less, in core sectors, production has declined due to lack of demand.'

'The agriculture sector is unstable, the steel sector is limping. The prices are sky-rocketing as there is unabated unemployment and unending cases of farmers' suicide.
