Expressing serious concern over the death of 21 people in Andhra Pradesh and three in Odisha due to cyclone Hudhud and huge loss of property, CPI today urged the Centre to declare the cyclone as national calamity.
"CPI urges upon the Government of India to declare Hudhud cyclone as a national calamity and provide all help that is necessary. The state governments should help the poor people to reconstruct their houses," CPI General Secretary S Sudhakar Reddy said in a statement here.
The state governments of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, the staff and officials have done a good job in evacuating lakhs of people in time and saved precious human lives, he said.
He regretted that people had difficulty in procuring essential food items like milk and drinking water.
CPI has decided to postpone the anti-price rise day programme scheduled on October 16 in AP and the three cyclone-affected districts of Odisha, he said, adding the party has instructed all its units and members to help the cyclone victims.
"However, the anti-price rise day would be observed in other states on October 16," he said.
