CPIM today expressed concern over the suspension of trade and travel across the Line of Control due to recent seizure of drugs in the Jammu and Kashmir.
"There is a serious concern on continuing stalemate over Cross LoC trade as a result of seizure of contraband. There is need to broaden the scope of Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) in Jammu and Kashmir instead of squeezing the same for an isolated unlawful event," CPIM State Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said here.
LoC trade and travel are the only significant CBMs achieved after tremendous efforts from both the sides steered by the urge for peace and prosperity in the region.
"While there is a need to prevent these channels opened up because of the honest and sincere commitments from getting misused by the forces inimical to peace, efforts should be made from both the sides of the border to strengthen and widen the scope of these CBMs in the larger interests of the region", he said.
"The significance of this important CBM should not be squeezed for an isolated unlawful act," he demanded.
He said that no doubt the peace process that has already suffered a lot due skirmishes on border got a further dent because of the recent episode of seizure of narcotics consignment on LoC but there is a need to safeguarded whatever little bonding established by the Trade and Travel across the LoC against any subversion.
