The large number of desertions, especially from the lower rungs of the party in West Bengal, and differences among some senior leaders in Kerala are understood to have prominently figured in the debate, as the CPI(M) Central Committee discussed the organisational report.
The failure of the party to stand up to the pressures of Trinamool Congress, the political violence against it in West Bengal and the state of the CPI(M)'s grassroot-level party organisation also came up for discussion.
The draft political-organisational report which was being discussed broadly outlines and analyses the present strengths and weaknesses of the organisation and its structure.
After the day-long deliberations of the Central Committee, the Politburo met in the evening to finalise the points raised during the three days of debate.
The Central Committee, which is likely to meet for a few hours tomorrow, gave more time to discussing the state of the party organisation after a section of its members felt no political-tactical line would work if the organisation was not strong enough, party sources said.
A majority of the members are understood to have felt that the fight against the "right-wing offensive", unleashed after BJP swept to power at the Centre and gaining strength in major states, has to be met by a more united and strong Left.
The CPI(M) should rally all Left forces to create a broad platform to fight neo-liberal policies, communalism and imperialism through united stand and joint activities, the members felt.
