Crane operator dies at Chennai silks demolition site

A 22-year-old crane operator, involved in demolishing the fire ravaged Chennai Silks building, was killed today when concrete debris fell on the machine and it toppled, police said.
Sarath Kumar from Krishnagiri district was operating the JCB machine this afternoon when concrete debris from the building fell on top of the machine, killing him instantly, they said.
"The machine toppled under the impact, killing Sarath Kumar instantly," an official said.
He was taken to Royapettah General Hospital were doctors declared him dead on arrival, he said.
Demolition work was temporarily suspended after the accident.
The May 31 fire in the seven storied building on arterial Usman Road in the shopping hub of T Nagar had gutted the building.
Twelve persons were rescued from the building early that morning, when the fire broke out.
