"In West Bengal, cases of outrageous acts against women are rising fast and coming close to those of Delhi. The state might surpass Delhi soon in this regard," Ganguly said at a Calcutta High Court event here to mark the International Women's Day.
Referring to the December 16 Delhi gangrape case, he complimented the civil society of the national capital for the response which almost paralysed normal life there for days.
"The civil society's outburst was fit and proper. But they made some excesses," he said.
He also urged the judges to sensitise people about treating women with dignity.
