Crime against women has witnessed over nine per cent increase in the country in 2014 in comparison to the previous year while there was a rise in about 53 per cent under crime against children during the same period, Rajya Sabha was informed today.
As per information provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), an increase of 9.2 per cent was reported in crime against women during 2014 over 2013, Minister of State for Home Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said in reply to a written question.
There was an increase of 53.6 per cent (from 58,224 cases in 2013 to 89,423 cases in 2014) under crime against children during 2014 over 2013 respectively.
"As per the seventh schedule to the Constitution of India Police and Public Order are State subjects and, as such, the primary responsibility of prevention, detection, registration, investigation and prosecution of crime, lies with the State Governments/ Union Territory Administrations," he said.

According to the NCRB report, there were 3,37,922 cases of crime against women in 2014 in comparison to 3,09,546 such cases in 2013.
"As per the seventh schedule to the Constitution of India Police and Public Order are State subjects and, as such, the primary responsibility of prevention, detection, registration, investigation and prosecution of crime, lies with the State Governments/ Union Territory Administrations," he said.
