In the wake of increasing incidents of crime against women in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today directed police to take stern action in such cases in "minimum response time".
"Police should take effective action in cases of crime against women in minimum response time," an official statement quoting the chief minister said.
Yadav, who was holding a review meeting of law and order in state, also asked the officials to effectively pursue pending court cases of crime against women so that the guilty can be punished.
Issuing an order that only senior police officers would brief media on cases pertaining to law and order, Yadav asked leaders of ruling Samajwadi Party to abstain from commenting on such cases.
The Chief Minister also warned officials that strict disciplinary action will be taken against them if laxity in duty is reported.
