Police said Sandip Sarkar (30) had allegedly hacked his wife Lakshmi (24), to death at their home in the village in North 24 Parganas this morning following a family dispute.
On receiving information, the police arrived in a vehicle to take him away.
While the police was taking the accused away, the villagers demanded that he be handed over to them and they would deal with him, the police said.
The police, however, took away the man and did not take any action against the villagers, the police said.
