The six names were picked up from a total of 4,200 suggestions given by visitors to the zoo, a TSZS spokesperson said.

The names of the cubs, including five lion cubs, were chosen through lottery on the concluding day function of the week-long Wildlife week organized at the zoo premises.

TSZS Director Bipul Chakraborty told PTI that for the first time in the country, the zoo authorities made a sincere effort to involve the public.

The lion cubs were gifted by the Pretoria-based National Zoo of South Africa recently.

As per the general practice, dignitaries, ministers or celebrities were involved in the process to name a lion or tiger cub in any zoo in the country "but for the first time, we have broken the tradition and involved the people in and around Jamshedpur..." he said.

While the tiger cub was named Dona, the two male lion cubs were named Edd and Jumbo and the female cubs named as Joya, Kimu and Shaliya, he said.

On the week-long function organized to observe the wildlife week, Chakraborty said a record number of children (over 1200) have taken part in a painting competition organized on the occasion.

The turn out was a record in the history of TSZS, he claimed.
