Senior Congress leader Amarinder Singh today alleged that the accused in the abetment to suicide case of a cable operator enjoyed political patronage as he demanded a fair probe into the matter.
Jaswinder Singh Jassi, a local cable operator, consumed some poisonous substance during a meeting of the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) on Saturday in the presence of its chairman and several judges. He was rushed to a hospital where he died yesterday.
In his suicide note, Jassi had said that he was being exploited by cable trade big-wigs who had taken over most of his business causing him huge financial losses.
Sarabjit Singh Raju and Pritpal Singh Lalli, managing directors of a cable network company, were booked under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC in connection with the case.
In a statement issued here, Amarinder alleged that the culprits were connected with the ruling party and the victim had been harassed to the extent that he ultimately decided to end his own life.
The former Chief Minister further alleged that the cable network company, which he said was "patronised by the government", had been victimising individual cable operators to eliminate competition.
Warning that 2017 was not far, Amarinder said he would ensure that each and everyone involved is held accountable and brought to the book when Congress comes to power.
Expressing sympathies with Jassi's family, the Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha asked the police to probe the matter without any fear or bias and ensure that the culprits were not only arrested but duly punished.
