Custodial death: Two Kerala constables sentenced to life

Two police constables were today sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here in connection with the custodial death of a 37-year old man here in 2005.
Additional Sessions Court-VI Judge K S Sarathchandran also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh each on the accused Jayakumar (47) and Venugopal (48), charged with murder among other offences, in connection with the death of the man after he was interrogated in a police station here in April, 2005.
The court found them guilty under IPC section 302, 348 (wrongful confinement) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

The prosecution case was that police took into custody Rajendran in connection with the theft of a mobile phone based on a complaint lodged by a private hospital here on April 6, 2005.
Rajendran was interrogated by the accused constables and 'third degree method' was used which led to his death. Though, he was rushed to the district hospital, he died, it was stated.
