Customs arrest six persons for trying to smuggle gold bars

Six persons were arrested at the Imphal Airport for allegedly trying to smuggle gold bars worth over Rs 1.7 crore, a Customs official said here today.
Thirty six gold bars were seized from their possession in separate seizures today as these air passengers were bound to Delhi and Kolkata, Custom Deputy Commissioner Prakash Borgohain said.
He said the value of the seized gold bars weighing 5.97 kg is estimated to be worth Rs 1.79 crore and interestingly, all of these bars were found inside the rectum of the arrested persons.
The arrests and seizures were made in separate cases was made while they were about to board the flights to Kolkata and some have connecting flights to Delhi.
The Custom officials said the six persons arrested were charged under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962 and further investigation is in progress.
