Daily energy shortage plunges 87.3 pc in July

Daily power shortage came down by 87.3 per cent to 14.1 million units per day in July this year as against 110.7 MU in July 2014.
"The average energy shortage has reduced to 14.1 MU (million units) per day in July 2016 from 110.7 MU per day in July 2014, thus showing a reduction of 87.3 per cent in energy shortage," Power Minister Piyush Goyal said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha today.
According to the statement, the per day power shortage was 61.8 million units in July last year.
The minister said power generation growth rose to 9.42 per cent in April-May of 2016-17 as against 5.65 per cent for the 10-year period from 2004-05 to 2013-14.

The corresponding figure for 2014-15 and 2015-16 stood at 8.4 per cent and 5.6 per cent, respectively.
In a separate reply to the House, the minister said the peak demand of electricity during April-June of 2016-17 was 1,52,974 MW and the peak demand met was 1,49,971 MW.

He further told the House that during the 12th Plan (2012-17) till June 30, 2016, power capacity addition of about 86,565 MW came from conventional sources and about 19,500 MW from renewable sources.
According to the minister, adequate supply of domestic coal to power plants has been ensured. Growth of domestic coal supply to power plants has been around 6.2 per cent in 2015-16.

As on August 3, 2016, the coal stock with power plants read 30.3 mt, which is sufficient for 22 days of operations as against the normative stock for 21 days. At present, there is no power station with critical coal stock.
During the 12th Plan, 89,813 ckm of transmission lines and 2,66,033 MVA of transformation capacity have been completed till June 30, 2016, Goyal added.
