A 35-year-old Dalit man detained for allegedly teasing a girl, died under mysterious circumstances in police custody early morning here today.
Police sources said that Vinay Gharu, a daily wage staffer of the municipal corporation, committed suicide in the Moghat police station lock up. However, family members of the deceased allege that he was beaten to death by the police.
Vinay, a resident of Gandhi Nagar, was arrested last night after a woman, a resident of the Sindhi colony complained that he had teased her, Additional Superintendent of Police Gopal Khandel said.
Vinay hanged himself in the police lock up, he said, adding that a probe has been ordered into the incident.
However, Vinay's brother Kewal alleged that the police had beaten him to death, and after he died, his body was sent to a hospital and his family was not even informed about it.
"Around 2.30 AM, we got the information from a member of our community working in the hospital that some policemen had dumped him there," he said.
