Dam caves in inundating villages, damaging crops over 100 acres

About a dozen villages were inundated on Sunday damaging crops over 100 acres of land after a dam caved in Chandwa under Pratappur block of Chatra district, officials said.

The Jai Prakash Dam, built at a cost of Rs 1.78 crore about one and half years ago, caved in not because of rain or floods, but irregularities committed in the construction, said Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Singh.

Singh said about a dozen villages were inundated while crops over 100 acres of land in Tandwa, Sankarpur, Kalyanpur, Tumuhan and Khutiyahi villages were damaged.

Action would be taken against the erring officials and contractor, Singh said adding, an FIR has been registered in this connection.
