An under-trial prisoner, lodged in the sub-jail here, allegedly tried to end his life by shooting himself from a country-made gun today, police said.
Dhananjay Chaturvedi, the under-trial prisoner, was taken to a hospital in critical condition after he shot himself in the head at the Daman sub-jail, said Daman Superintendent of Police Seju Kuruvilla.
Chaturvedi was arrested last year for alleged involvement in the rape and murder of a minor girl, he said.
"His condition is still critical and he has been shifted to a hospital in Silvassa where he is on ventilator support. We have also recovered a suicide note," said Kuruvilla, without revealing contents of the note.
Police found 11 live cartridges in his barracks along with the country-made gun, the officer said.
"We are investigating how a gun and live cartridges reached inside the jail. We will take strict action against those responsible," the SP said.
