Two-time winner on the PGA Tour, Chopra, who was Tied-27th last week at the New Zealand PGA Championships, had two birdies on the front nine and just one bogey on the back nine at the Millbrook resort course.
Leading the field was Steve Jones who shot six-under 66 through the tough morning conditions despite opening with back-to-back bogeys.
Having spent 2015 at home caring for his family, while his wife received treatment for a brain tumour, Jones was happy to see today's result close that period in his life.
The NZ Open is being held on two courses at Millbrook Resort and The Hills.
